So here I am, safe and sound back in Kita, Mali. It was really nice to be able to come home for Christmas and see people, eat good food, and catch up with family and friends. I realized how much I missed hot showers and fast, accessible internet, really delicious food and good alcohol. I remembered what was so great about Mexico and the US, and why I want to come back soon. There wasn’t as much culture shock as I thought I might have, coming from being here and going straight back into American culture. It all felt very natural to me, almost like I hadn’t been gone that long, although I admit being overwhelmed at times with everyone owning a fancy phone.
Being back in Mali already, it seems like time has gone by very quickly. I think everyone in my group is a little taken aback at how far into our service we are, and how little time we have left. Everyone is starting to talk about closing projects, taking last vacations and plans for afterwards. I know I’m looking forward to finishing up my time here and moving on to the next stage of my life.
